This image captures a leopard high in the branches of a tree in Namibia, a rare and striking encounter in the wild. My guide suggested the animal had recently made a kill, possibly an ibex, and had carried part of the meal into the tree to feed undisturbed. Whether or not every detail of the story is certain, the presence and composure of the leopard are unmistakable.

The animal’s markings stand out sharply against the pale bark and dry scrub of the Namibian bush. There is an elegance to the way it occupies the tree, entirely relaxed, entirely in control.
