Taken from roughly 37,000 feet as the aircraft banked above the Amazon, this image captures a vertical view straight down onto the rainforest canopy and the river cutting through it. The perspective is unusual. From this altitude, the jungle becomes an abstract field of deep green, bisected by the winding, sediment-rich water of the Amazon itself.

The scale is what makes the image so compelling. Individual trees disappear into a continuous carpet of canopy, and the river, one of the largest on Earth, reads as a single, serpentine line through the frame. The colours are rich and natural: deep forest greens against the brown and silver of the water. It is, personally, one of the most meaningful photographs in this collection.
