Captured high in the Peruvian Andes during the Santa Cruz Trek, this image reveals the quiet movement of the night sky over several hours. The photograph was created using a long exposure, allowing the rotation of the Earth to be recorded as sweeping arcs of light across the sky. These arcs, known as star trails, trace the paths stars appear to follow as the planet slowly turns beneath them.

With no light pollution across this remote mountain landscape, the camera recorded the true, natural colours of the night sky. Subtle purples, blues, and soft whites reflect the glow of the Milky Way and distant nebulae, preserved exactly as they appeared to the naked eye in total darkness.
